There are some great-looking fixtures in store this weekend, and with all the lineups revealed, there’s plenty of big-name talent on display. We’re in for a treat, and here are my predictions for Round 1.
Don’t forget to take me on in Superbru by joining our Predictor league here.
Ulster v Wasps
With Wasps’ injury issues, I can only really see a home win here. It’s a good-looking Ulster team, featuring the likes of Iain Henderson, Christian Leali’ifano and Charles Piutau, and I think they’ll be too good for Wasps and deny them a losing bonus point in the process. Ulster by 8.
Leinster v Montpellier
This is possibly the match of the round, with the big-spending French outfit travelling to European heavyweights Leinster. Coach Leo Cullen has made some spicy comments about other teams’ player budgets, but they’ve got a strong squad of their own and really need to win their home games to have any chance of progression from the hardest group. Leinster by 2.
Racing v Leicester
This a tough trip first up for the Tigers, and I suspect they’ll be happy enough with a losing bonus point. Racing have a huge pack and a lethal back three of Virimi Vakatawa, Joe Rokocoko and Teddy Thomas, and Leicester look slightly underpowered by comparison. Racing by 9.
Harlequins v La Rochelle
La Rochelle have been going well in the Top 14 and currently sit in 3rd place, with a couple of away wins to their name. Their team isn’t particularly special though, and I think Quins at home should be able to beat the travel-shy French. Harlequins by 4.
Bath v Treviso
This is the only real gift in terms of predictions, and should be a bonus-point win for the home team. Bath by 23.
Exeter v Glasgow
Every match feels like a must-win fixture in this group. My initial instinct was to pick Glasgow, who remain unbeaten in the Pro14 – but they have just been to play the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, and whilst jet lag isn’t an issue, they might be a little travel-weary, and that’s making me back the home side. Exeter by 2.
Castres v Munster
This French team can be very unpredictable, and already have a win over Clermont to their name as well as a defeat to Brive. I think Munster can go there and win. Munster by 4.
Toulon v Scarlets
The Scarlets have been performing well domestically, but a win in Toulon feels like a bit of a stretch. Leigh Halfpenny will know what it takes as he returns to his former club, but I can’t see it happening. Toulon by 16.
Northampton v Saracens
The Saints have been playing well since their dismal opening defeat to Sarries, but it’s hard to pick against Saracens, who are going for a third European title in a row. The Dylan Hartley v Jamie George subplot is of particular interest for England fans ahead of the Autumn Internationals, and my views on that battle reflect my feelings of which side will win on Sunday. Saracens by 6.
Ospreys v Clermont
In classic French style, Clermont have won all their home games this season, and lost all their away games. That means this is a great chance for the Ospreys to get their campaign underway, and they need to win at home if they want to qualify for the latter stages. Clermont is bringing a decent team, but this is winnable for the Welsh. Ospreys by 2.
What do you think of these predictions?

Racing are without Carter and Vakatawa is playing out of position at outside centre so I think if Tigers match the physicalility they had against Exeter then Tigers could win.

Saints v Sarries should be interesting. Saints have really turned a corner since that first game and will give Sarries a good game. Really want Sarries to win, but difficult to call!!

Very similar picks/scorelines from me – except as a Leicester fan I had to back my team to squeak a narrow victory over Racing.
I also picked Clermont to spank Ospreys by 12 as despite French teams inability to travel, the Ospreys have been pretty woeful this season

Better get in b4 the King of subjectivity, AlexD, starts spouting more ‘cobblers’. Predictions seem sensible, altho a couple of the tight ones may be reversed, e.g., Montpellier.

I think Toulon-Scarlets will be closer, for me Toulon by 8
Clermont usually start in good shape the ECC, and I think will win by more than one score. Clermont by 10
