We spoke to BT Sport ambassador and analyst, Brian O’Driscoll this week, previewing BT Sport’s exclusive coverage of the Heineken Champions Cup, and he was good enough to share his Superbru predictions for Round 1 this weekend.
I had made and written up my predictions before he gave us his, so as not to be influenced by a Rugby legend that arguably knows this tournament marginally better than me.
Leinster v Wasps
Hutch: That Leinster side looks formidable; easily international standard. Wasps’ front five looks lightweight in comparison, and I think they’ll get steamrolled. Leinster by 23
BOD: Leinster’s squad looks really strong, they’re playing well and with this being their first game looking to retain the trophy I think they’ll win it. Another thing Leinster have in their favour is their small injury list which is something Wasps don’t have and they may also now be without Nathan Hughes due to his disciplinary case. I think the one thing that could affect Leinster is the big storm that is expected to hit Dublin which would make conditions more difficult and could prevent them getting a bonus point. Leinster by 15
Bath v Toulouse
Hutch: The French side has had the better start domestically, but we all know that French teams don’t like to play away from home, and there’s heavy rain forecast. Bath by 5
BOD: This will be a close one and I think we could see each of the teams in this group take points off one another. Toulouse are re-emerging and will be tough to beat but there’s something about The Rec, I always enjoyed playing there and games at that ground always seem to be exciting. It’s one of the better places to play and I think with home advantage Bath can edge it. Bath by 4
Montpellier v Edinburgh
Hutch: The French side is looking to win this tournament, whilst the Scots are looking for their first away win of the season. If you can beat Toulouse by 51 points, you can beat Edinburgh. Montpellier by 28
BOD: I do think Edinburgh are a better side than some people may think. They have one of the better defences in the Pro14 and could make it tough but I think Montpellier are looking good, they’re up in the top 6 of the Top14 and should have too much. Montpellier by 12
Exeter v Munster
Hutch: I’m looking forward to this game. Munster have had some massive home wins so far this season, scoring over 50 points on average – but their away form has been poor, scoring an average of 15 points. I think the Chiefs are contenders for this tournament, and they ought to open their account with a win at Sandy Park. Exeter by 7
BOD: Munster’s form has been disappointing in terms of results but I think that hides the fact they’ve actually put in some good performances and could easily have come away with something last weekend against Leinster had a few more decisions gone their way. Exeter Chiefs are looking incredibly tough to beat though, especially at Sandy Park, so I’ll be going with the home side again. Exeter Chiefs by 9
Scarlets v Racing
Hutch: This could be a good game to watch, with both teams going reasonably well in their respective leagues. It’s a tough group, and winning home games is essential if Scarlets want to progress, and I think they might edge it. Scarlets by 2
BOD: Scarlets have a great record at Parc y Scarlets and this should be a very exciting game against last year’s finalists. I won’t pretend I’ve seen all of Racing’s games so far this season but with Zebo in form and Teddy Thomas returning to training they’ll be strong. It should be a great game and I’m going with Scarlets by 6. Scarlets by 6
Ulster v Leicester
Hutch: Normally I’d be leaning towards the home side here, but Ulster have had a shocking run recently – losing 64-7 to Munster and then succumbing to Connacht at home. Leicester haven’t been great either though, and the match at Twickenham last weekend was fairly dreadful by all accounts. Can they rouse themselves for a memorable away win in Europe? Leicester by 4
BOD: This is a really interesting one and I think there is the potential for an away win. Ulster have a few injuries and haven’t put in great performances even when they’ve managed results against the likes of Edinburgh and the Southern Kings. However, I think Leicester are conceding too many points which you may be able to get away with at times in the Gallagher Premiership but are less likely to in Europe. Ulster by 5
Gloucester v Castres
Hutch: This French side have had a couple of surprise results, in that they’ve won two away matches, at Toulouse and Montpellier no less. But Gloucester have been playing well, including a rare away win at Wasps last weekend, and I think they’ll win this at Kingsholm. Gloucester by 7
BOD: I’m going to have to go with another home win! Cipriani has obviously been a standout for Gloucester but I think they’ve made some really astute business all round picking up the likes of Grobler from Munster to strengthen the pack. There seems to be two sides to Castres depending on whether they’re home or away and I also wonder whether or not their heart will be more in the Top14 than the Champions Cup this year. Gloucester by 11
Lyon v Cardiff
Hutch: Lyon are currently third in the Top 14, whilst Cardiff have responded to a dreadful start to the season, putting together three wins a row. I’m going with the French side at home though. Lyon by 13
BOD: Lyon are playing well and are almost becoming the new Toulon now that they’ve had some money invested as well. We saw Cardiff bounce back from a losing start to the Pro14 against Munster and they’ve picked up some more victories since but I think Lyon should be able to get the victory here as the home side. Lyon by 8
Toulon v Newcastle
Hutch: After such a great season last year, the Falcons are back at the bottom of the Premiership, and a trip to Toulon is not really what they need. Toulon aren’t the side they used to be, and sit 13th in the Top 14, but they’ll still be better than Newcastle. Toulon by 16
BOD: Newcastle are obviously struggling in comparison to last season and this could be a tricky start to their first year back in the Champions Cup for a while. Toulon haven’t had the best start to the season in the Top 14 but I picture them winning this down in the South of France on Sunday afternoon. Toulon by 14
Glasgow v Saracens
Hutch: This could be a great game, with the Pro14 leaders up against the Premiership champions at Scotstoun. There’s a reasonable chance of a home win, but I’m struggling to pick against Saracens at the moment. Saracens by 6
BOD: Finally I can go with an away win! This could be tight as Glasgow have a great home record at Scotstoun – it’s a tough place to go – but you just look at Sarries’ form so far this season and you have to expect them to grind it out. They’ve been really strong in the Premiership and should be too strong for Glasgow as well. Saracens by 4
Whose picks do you think are better? Only one different winner predicted, where I have picked Leicester and BOD has gone for Ulster. Here is the prediction league if you would like to make your own picks.

Home wins all the way bar Saracens with some dissent over Ulster-Tigers.
Tigers are unlikely to win in Belfast where home advantage is going to be a vital factor. Plus, Tigers away form in Europe is atrocious.
Saracens to win in Glasgow? yes I think so. Difficult to back against them them the way they re playing.
Tonights game is likely to go only one way. Pity Wasps are going into this one short of so many key players, though even at full strength they would struggle to contain the best side in the competition.

IYO! The best team is likely to be the one that wins the comp… and Leinster ain’t quite done that yet, BeJesus!

Not sure I agree with that; the ABs are pretty universally acclaimed as the best side in the world atm, and they’ve earned that through consistently winning, and usually winning well. Leinster at present are no different. Yes there is quicker turnover for club sides, as the best side in the European competition often don’t stay unbeaten, or reclaim the crown, even within a year. But even so, the crown is in place until someone knocks it off imo, even if the cup is there for everyone to have a stab at it. Definitely plenty of sides capable of doing so, but if Leinster are able to crush Wasps by 50pts, even with a few notable absentees, then they’re certainly maintaining their right to that crown, and the bragging rights.
Said as a guy supporting a team hoping to knock the crown off!

Not sure I agree with that (yr post i.e.) either. Comparing a club with an international side is a bit of a leap of faith for a start & besides atm is inaccurate. NZ have been No. 1 for c. the past decade. Leinster haven’t. Also, in knock out comps all the teams start from scratch. Past cup records make count for something, but only if a team keeps winning & not many have for long. So, the best team in this yr’s tournament is yet to be realised…atm.
