England were under extreme pressure in a must-win game, and for a team much-maligned for its obsession with kicking, they must be given enormous credit for their willingless to run the ball from their own try line. It is a try that will be replayed thousands of time to English rugby fans.

While I agree the Scarlets’ try is a highly attractive, well-executed move, they attack from a strong position, having secured the turnover, and quick ball, around midfield. England, however, attacked from their own goal line in an international, which seems to foster more conservative play, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Instead of immediately slowing the game down and clearing their lines, returning possession to Aus, as we would see in most matches, the England players successfully recognized the attacking potential of the situation, and manipulated the defense accordingly. The ability to play heads-up rugby, and turn an almost certain points-against situation into points-for, is what makes Ashton’s a much better try.

I think it’s a deserving winner of this poll, and it’s unlikely to be caught!

Rhys priestlands try was sublime. Sky at the time said it was odds on to be try of the season. Me thinks someone is paranoid about welsh people.

Appreciate a great try when you see it. No doubt there will be more to come from the mighty scarlets.

the Stephen Jones try from the same game is unlucky not to be up there too.

I reckon Andrew Trimble’s try for Ulster vs Bath in Jan this year, in last season’s Heineken Cup, deserves a look-in too.
