Rugby World Cup 2015: Australia Player Ratings vs Uruguay

15.  Kurtley Beale:  8
Impressive stuff from the Waratahs man.  Seemed to have a hand in most of the tries, with one grubber kick for Joe Tomane’s try particularly catching the eye, and he stepped up to the playmaker role well when Quade was on the naughty boy’s step.  Offers real width from deep.

14.  Joe Tomane: 6
Will be pleased to have got on the scoresheet and showed off his physicality and speed in the first half, but he didn’t really go looking for work as much as he could have.  Could have shown more.

13.  Henry Speight: 7
Moved in from the wing and did a good job, doing Kuridrani’s role of providing brute strength and pace to a slick Wallaby midfield and finished well for his try.

12.  Matt Toomua: 6
‘Quadzilla’ didn’t dominate the midfield quite like I thought he might, but he was still a safe and dependable option in the 12 shirt, and was another man to cross the whitewash.

11.  Drew Mitchell: 8
Some uncharacteristic butter-fingers early on in the game, but he came good as the game went on.  Superb finish for his first score, showing great feet, and worked hard to hit lines and make breaks throughout.

10.  Quade Cooper: 5
Possibly harsh, but he just makes my head explode.  The Wallabies need someone with control in the 10 shirt, and this was the chance for Cooper to show that side of his game to compliment the bits we all know about.  He didn’t take the chance.  Don’t get me wrong, there were some outrageous steps and two glorious fizzed passes that, probably, nobody else in world rugby could manage, but he also missed seven of his 11 kicks at goal, booted the ball out on the full and got himself sin-binned for a dangerous tackle.

9.  Nick Phipps:  7
No real sparks himself, but he provided fast and reliable service throughout the game – which, considering the width with which Cooper was playing, was a pretty impressive feat in itself.

1.  Scott Sio: 7
Carried on from an encouraging display against Fiji with another strong performance in the set piece.  Will most likely start against England so Chieka will hope that the motor is still running smoothly.

2.  Tatafu Polata-Nau: 6
Solid all round display from the hooker, who was tidy in the set-piece.  Was aggressive in defence but not quite as dominant with the ball in hand as I would have expected.

3.  Toby Smith: 8
The cornerstone of a dominant performance in the tight, Smith put in an eye-catching display that culminated in a cracking gallop upfield in the second half.

4.  Dean Mumm: 8
Very good knock from the stand-in skipper.  Pressured the Uruguayan line-out throughout the game and even strode over for a try to add the cherry to an energetic display.

5.  Will Skelton:  6
Went off with a shoulder injury in the second half, which will worry the Wallaby coaches who will see Skelton as ideal impact material against England.  Once again, from the start here, he failed to have the devastating impact that we often see off the bench, although his work rate was improved.

6.  Ben McCalman: 9
Awesome all-round display – a classic blindside performance.  Gave no quarter in defence and was so, so aggressive on the carry, usually causing two or three defenders to step in to stop him just because of his sheer determination.  Man of the match.

7.  Sean McMahon: 8
Pushed McCalman hard for the top honours and it was another energetic and aggressive display from the young flanker.  Scored a deserved brace, too, and you wonder if his energy will be appealing to the coaches as a bench option against England.

8.  Wycliff Palu: 6
Was building nicely before he retired hurt at half-time.  Showed a massive work rate in defence but I’d still like to see him lurking in the wider channels where he could really do some damage on the carry.

Replacements:  6
Solid stuff from the bench but no real fireworks, although Kuridrani got over for a score with one of his only touches of the ball.

  1. I really hope he does. Yes he can do some magic things, but he can also do some god-awful things. I also don’t think he’s ever done well against England – happy to be corrected though

He is this generation’s Carlos Spencer
