Mon, 09 Sep 2019 15:41:12 +0000https://therugbyblog.com/?p=50172#comment-413110It is one hell of a blockbuster opening weekend with both SA v NZ and IRE v SCO looking like group deciders first up.
SA have looked much improved this season and while having a fairly R1 game plan have some game breaker like Kolbe and De Klerk who can produce a bit of magic. They are genuine contenders for the final. Even if they finish 2nd in their group they would fancy their chances against Ireland Wales or Australia at the moment

Mon, 09 Sep 2019 14:00:08 +0000https://therugbyblog.com/?p=50172#comment-413107The Times’ & ST’s’ hacks, incl Dallaglio, back the Saffers according to Barnes. BOD backs England. The bookies back NZ. As a pointer, guess we’ll know more on the 21/9. SA will go with trad R1 running @ & over opposition via both fwds & backs. They’ll use de Klerk’s boot. They’ll also use their rush defence. Barnes opined that the latter ‘forced’ the AB’s into deploying their 2 playmaker system. Maybe. Hid it pretty well v Tonga though. Perhaps it was a planned option? Anyway, gauging by recent results, SA will be a formidable opponent. Opposition will have to shut down their loose ball supply & defend diligently & durably. On the back foot their wide men may be defensively vulnerable, in particular to aerial attack. Their midfield are vigorous & aggressive, certainly on defence. However, they may lack some finesse in attack. Will some teams attempt to outlast them by cutting of their ball & running them around the park with dual 7’s systems? Time’ll tell. Whatever, they’ll still take some stopping I think.
