I think Nick Easter is an obvious first choice at 8, but I think Waldrom is the only other player I think of as a number 8 (although he covers 6 and 7 well). I’d certainly rate him above Haskell. I think he has what England need, pace, good going forwards or backwards, line breaking, power and carrying ability. Couple that with his backrow versatility, I thought he woul’ve been exactly what Johnson wanted.

As a replacement under the rules, if he plays Romania, England would have to name him as someone’s replacement. In turn, he could only be replaced if injured.

I think there are players more deserving than Waldrom of being in the side, but Waldrom offers something different. He has a good line-breaking game and good offloads and could be the spark needed on field to ignite the backs.

Can he play the Romania game, giving Easter a break, and then step out of the team again? If so, it seems like a win all-round (especially for Sarries).
