I feel he’s been a bit unlucky not to get another chance (4 caps 3 tries, last of which was 6 years ago as a 22 year old), seems very early to write someone off who scores buckets of tries at club level. It’s not like we’ve had anyone pulling up trees on the left flank keeping him out.

I must admit I thought Varndell was older, one of those players who seems to have been around for ages. From a distance, it’s hard to see why he hasn’t had more caps. He must be near the top of the try scoring list for every season he’s played in, and some of that time was with Leicester, so one might think he would get a look in. I guess his defensive shortcomings were seen to be too much of a liability.

I hope Wade doesn’t get tarred with the same brush when he gets his chance with England. Potentially a very special player.

Why does everyone keep mentioning May as a barrier whenever there is a wing discussion. May was utterly disappointing and ineffective in the 6n. He was given a run of 5 games. Did very little.

It will be difficult for Varndell to play for England again. I think it’s quite unlikely. In 2012/13 he has running in tries for fun, and still didn’t even make the Saxons in the January.

For Wasps though, this game is huge. 7th would be great for Wasps this year, and a chance to play with Europe’s elite next year is exciting for all fans – we’ve spent too long without it!
