A Welsh rugby player who had to stop playing the game when he couldn’t find a pair of boots that fitted him was handed a lifeline by an unlikely source over the weekend.
Carl Griffiths of Trimsaran RFC had been sidelined since January, when he hit the headlines after destroying a pair of size 18 boots, the biggest size that was previously available to him. On Saturday his club was informed on Twitter by adidas that they had specially crafted a pair of size 21 Kakari boots – the model designed for the biggest and heaviest players – and that Carl should come to collect them from the club.
“It is amazing to be able to play the game I love again,” he said. “I had no idea they were planning this and I had almost given up hope of ever finding boots that would fit me again.”
The surprise was complete when Wales captain Sam Warburton arrived to deliver the boots.
“As soon as the team at adidas told me about this story I bit their hand off to be involved. I’ve had my fair share of injuries and breaks from the game over the years and I know it’s one of the worst feelings you can have,” said Warburton.
“It’s great to have been involved in getting Carl back on the rugby field and you can tell it means a lot to him and his teammates. I’m sure they’ll be reminding him that he has some big boots to fill now though!”
