British & Irish Lions Six Nations

Who would you include in a post-Six Nations Lions squad?

If the tour to New Zealand were right now, who would make the Lions matchday squad? Four of our writers give their opinions.

Picking a Lions squad is always a fun exercise, regardless of the time in the cycle between tours, and given the seriousness of most debates surrounding rugby at the moment, here at TRB we think you could do with blowing off a bit of steam. What better way to do that than picking a squad of the best British and Irish players?

Mike Cooper
@RuckedOver

Team: 15. Stuart Hogg 14. Tommy Bowe 13. Jonathan Joseph 12. Jamie Roberts 11. George North 10. Jonathan Sexton 9. Ben Youngs; 1. Joe Marler 2. Rory Best 3. Dan Cole 4. Alun Wyn Jones 5. Paul O’Connell 6. Peter O’Mahony 7. Sam Warburton 8. Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16. Tom Youngs 17. Cian Healy 18. Samson Lee 19. Courtney Lawes 20. Sean O’Brien 21. Conor Murray 22. George Ford 23. Manu Tuilagi

The tight five arguably picks itself – Marler’s improvements in the set piece have been obvious, Rory Best is like an extra flanker over the ball and Dan Cole is probably the best tighthead in world rugby. Alun-Wyn Jones and Paul O’Connell are ruthless, agressive and inspirational – just what you need when you’re playing the All Blacks in their back yard. Peter O’Mahony’s aggression and Billy Vunipola’s blockbusting displays see them in, while at 7 I changed my mind about 90 times – statistically, Chris Robshaw was better, with more tackles, more carries and more turnovers than Warburton, but the Welshman has a knack of making big plays at key times.

Ben Youngs is back to his best and poses more of a threat than Murray, but Sexton is still there to take control if needs must, which gives him the nod over Ford. It’s the same story with Roberts, who is in ahead of Henshaw despite the Irishman looking equally impressive in the 6N. There can’t be any doubt about the form 13 in Jonathan Joseph, whose electric feet and acceleration offer something completely different. On the wings, I’ve gone for the pure speed and power of North – the only winger in the northern hemisphere who can match Savea and the nous and class of Bowe, who starts despite Williams’ aerial ability and Watson’s raw talent. Another big call is at fullback, where I’ve picked Stuart Hogg; Halfpenny is a great player but Sexton is almost as deadly off the tee, and Hogg offers more threat from deep.

Weirdly my favourite part of the line-up is the bench, which just oozes impact, with Murray in there to lend a stabalising hand if needed. And Manu might be on the treatment table indefinitely but, if he’s fit, he’s involved. Because, well, it’s Manu.

Jamie Hosie
@jhosie43

Team: 15. Stuart Hogg 14. Tommy Seymour 13. Jonathan Joseph 12. Jamie Roberts 11. George North 10. Jonathan Sexton 9. Ben Youngs; 1. Joe Marler 2. Dylan Hartley 3. Dan Cole 4. Courtney Lawes 5. Paul O’Connell 6. Peter O’Mahony 7. Sam Warburton 8. Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16. Rory Best 17. Cian Healy 18. Samson Lee 19. Alun-Wyn Jones 20. Sean O’Brien 21. Conor Murray 22. George Ford 23. Liam Williams

The contentious calls come pretty thick and fast in my team. Stuart Hogg is one of the best counter-attackers in the world and gets the nod ahead of Halfpenny, because with Sexton goal-kicking you don’t need the deadeye Welshman. Tommy Seymour is a class finisher and thoroughly underrated player and joins George North on the flanks, while Joseph’s agility and Roberts’ power are the perfect foil for each other.

Sexton lends a controlling hand from 10 and Youngs is back to his sniping best. The English front row has been imperious recently and will beast pretty much anyone, while O’Connell’s relentless passion will allow Lawes to just get his head down and smash things. O’Mahony sneaks in ahead of O’Brien because of his better breakdown technique, which will be vital against the All Blacks, plus O’Brien’s greater versatility makes him a useful bench option.

In Best, Healy, O’Brien, Ford and Williams you have genuine impact subs if the game isn’t going your way, and in Lee, Jones and Murray you have guys to bring on and steady the ship if you’re well ahead. All bases covered off the bench.

Dave Blair
@viscount_dave

Team: 15. Stuart Hogg 14. Liam Williams 13. Jonathan Davies 12. Jamie Roberts 11. George North 10. Jonathan Sexton 9. Conor Murray; 1. Joe Marler 2. Rory Best 3. Dan Cole 4. Alun Wyn Jones 5. Paul O’Connell 6. Peter O’Mahony 7. Sam Warburton 8. Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16. Richard Hibbard 17. Cian Healy 18. Dave Wilson 19. Courtney Lawes 20. Sean O’Brien 21. Rhys Webb 22. George Ford 23. Jonathan Joseph

With free-flowing rugby taking the British Isles by storm in March I’ve opted for an attack minded back-three of Stuart Hogg, Liam Williams and George North. The continually excellent Leigh Halfpenny is the obvious exclusion despite his heroics down under in 2013. Jonathan Davies and Jamie Roberts are a proven partnership with Lions experience which counts massively in their favour, while Jonathan Joseph lit up the Six Nations and would make a serious impact as a replacement.

For game management a Sexton-Murray axis at half-back is up there with the very best in the world, and George Ford, who impressed during the Six Nations, and Rhys Webb, just ahead of Ben Youngs, are the replacement halves.

My front-five share 370 Test caps between them, including 13 Lions tests in the second-row, so there’s no shortage of experience and no shortage of power in reserve to come on and see out the game in Hibbard, Healy and Lawes. Incidentally, Dan Cole is arguably the only irreplaceable in the squad. I desperately want to find room for Sean O’Brien in the back-row, but his versatility to cover each position from the bench and the consistently exceptional performances of O’Mahony, Warburton and Vunipola over the course of the Six Nations provides the best balance.

James Hutchison
@Hutch_James

Team: 15. Leigh Halfpenny 14. Liam Williams 13. Jonathan Joseph 12. Robbie Henshaw 11. George North 10. Jonny Sexton 9. Conor Murray; 1. Alasdair Dickinson 2. Dylan Hartley 3. Dan Cole 4. Alun Wyn Jones 5. Courtney Lawes 6. Sean O’Brien 7. Sam Warburton 8. Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16. Scott Baldwin 17. Joe Marler 18. Samson Lee 19. Jonny Gray 20. Peter O’Mahony 21. Ben Youngs 22. Dan Biggar 23. Stuart Hogg

The back three and front row were hardest to pick for me, particularly full-back – how do you choose between Leigh Halfpenny, Rob Kearney, Stuart Hogg and Mike Brown? In the end I had to go for the deadeye boot of the Welshman, with Hogg’s versatility helpful off the bench.

In the front row, Dickinson, Marler and McGrath all put in worthy performances in the Six Nations, and Alex Corbisiero should be back in contention. Hartley gets the nod at hooker having assured me his disciplinary issues are behind him, and he has a point to prove for the Lions.

Henshaw over Roberts is perhaps the other controversial selection, but either would do a job as a foil for Joseph.

What would your Lions squad look like after the Six Nations? Post it below.

Coached by Schmidt. Gatland can shove his head up his ass.

Why not both? or Lancaster, there was next to nothing between them across the championship. how can you pick tuilagi? how can anyone he’s been out of rugby for almost a season, if he was fit tomorrow he wouldn’t just jump straight back on to the international scene. Not even Dan Carter or BOD, or McCaw or even JP Williams could. ITs stupid. he’s great running forward, but his defence is no better than Burrel, J.Davies or Henshaw, while Dunbar and Roberts are far more sturdy. While going forward, JJ, Bennett, and J davies bring more pace and vision in attack. if you were going for a balanced center partnership, Roberts and Bennett…. Or Henshaw and Davies. Or Dunbar and JJ all of these have more balance.

“Why not both?” Because Gatland is hated in Ireland. They don’t explain why*, they just seem incapable of not feeling slighted about something and seeing as people are only saying good things about them now they seem to feel the need to imagine Gatland has slighted them so they can stick with the disrespected outsiders tag they like to use in build ups.

*I suppose he didn’t pick BOD once for a match his team then went on to win by a stack of points and secure the first Lions tour win in over a decade. Which is irrelevant as if he’d picked BOD and a whole load of other players from the team that came 3rd in that years 6 nations then the Lions would have won by a lot more. Probably. Andy nobody disrespects a fading 34 year old BOD. NOBODY. He did also give BOD his first cap. And turn a team who previously targeted 1 win a year into a competitive force. And win back to back European cups. And 2 Grand Slams. What a ding dong.

My apologies Brighty –

that one slipped passed me as I was trying to have an alcohol induced “digital detox” over the easter. Try it sometime – I think you would enjoy it!!

I always thought you put your trolling hat on before you trolled!?

I think what raised the hackles most in Ireland was, funnily enough, how Gatland made out there was hatred between Ireland and Wales. This along with many other backfiring comments over the years means he is no class act. Subtle as a hooker!

I want you to answer this next question honestly –

Were you cheering on my beloved Leinster over the weekend? Leinster THE DEFENDERS OF DEMOCRACY in the ERC – our last hope to save rugby as we know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PEW – PEW PHEW! PHEW! – Shots fired!!!!

DDD

PS Ireland never only targeted 1 win a year – it was 2. Neil Francis (another plank) only ever targeted 1 win a year. Neil Francis – the worst lock to ever grace an Ireland team – men and womens!

DDD

1. Healy 2.Hartley 3.Cole 4.Lawes 5. Wyn-Jones 6.Wood 7.Warburton 8.O’Brien 9.Youngs 10.Sexton 11.North 12.Dunbar 13.Joseph 14.Halfpenny 15.Hogg

It will depend on the gamplan. I think Gatland has shown the template on the last tour: start with one national team and bring in players who will genuinely improve the team.

From my Anglo-centric viewpoint, I would look to add a flanker as I believe the balance in our pack is wrong (O’Brien or Warburton), a 12 to sort out the back-line (Roberts) and depending on his fitness George North on the wing (because he’s George North). There may be room for an outstanding individual (for example O’Connell, Sexton or Hogg), but if I picked England as my starting point I would end up with about 10 Englishmen with the team. By the same token I think if I started with Ireland I’d have 10 Irishmen and if I started with Wales I’d have 10 Welshmen. Unfortunately I do not feel picking Scotland as a starting point would be a wise move, although if you had the Grays, Dunbar and Hogg starting as your “incumbent” players it would be harder to justify removing them, and you could easily end up with quite a few Scottish players.

I think any genuinely balanced team that looks to pick 3/4 from each country is ultimately doomed to fail. You have to lean towards one country and their gameplan. It helps if you’re also the coach of that country.

So taking the average across the 4 selections to remove any bias the team should be
XV XIII
Hogg 75% 100%
Williams 50% 75%

LEON – you are getting ahead of yourself- you are obviously supposing that there is a mean anomaly of g = 357.528^\circ + 0.9856003^\circ n – no?

Do you see it now?

Seriously – I’m yellow carding you for that entry! – you need to get out in the air a little. You are showing signs of cabin fever. Look upon this as an intervention! You’ll thank me in the long run.

So, the teams are pretty clear.

So rather than choose mine, and being a regular reader of the Sunday Times, I would go for a Stephen Jones selection which would ordinarily mix the obvious, with the debatable, with the highly contentious and usually one bizarre left field selection;

15. Hogg
14. Wade
13. Joseph
12. Dunbar
11. North
10. Ford
9. Webb
1. McGrath
2. Cowan-Dickie
3. Cole
4. O’Connell
5. Gray (J)
6. O’Mahoney
7. Robshaw (capt)
8. Armitage

..as captain. I did slip up there.

Still he would make Dallaglio’s team, along with Cipriani, Daly, Simpson, Bradley Davies and Buster White!

Robshaw at 7 and captain. You’ve captured the ignorant views of Stephen Jones perfectly. Nice one.

Still think Haskell being tackled by a post has a good shot at “moment of the six nations” partly because if I’d told you it had happened and asked you to guess which player you’d probably get it right straight away. Classic meat head.

1. Joe Marler 2. Rory Best 3. Mike Ross 4. A.W Jones 5. Paul O’Connell 6. Peter O’Mahony 7. Sam Warburton 8. Billy Vunipola 9. Conor Murray 10. Jonathan Sexton 11. George North 12. Robbie Henshaw 13. Jonathan Joseph 14. Tommy Bowe 15. Mike Brown

Replacements
16. Tom Youngs 17. Cian Healy 18. Samson Lee 19. Courtney Lawes 20. Sean O’Brien 21. Ben Youngs 22. George Ford 23. Stuart Hogg

15. Mike Brown 14. Tommy Bowe 13. Jonathan Joseph 12. Alex Dunbar 11. George North 10. Jonny Sexton 9 Conor Murray 1. Joe Marler 2. Rory Best 3. Dan Cole 4. Alun Wyn Jones 5. Courtney Lawes 6. Chris Robshaw 7. Sam Warburton 8. Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16. Tom Youngs 17. Cian Healy 18. Samson Lee 19. Iain Henderson 20. Sean O’Brien 21. Ben Youngs 22. George Ford 23. Scott Williams

Am not considering players like Corbisiero, Launchbury, or Tuilagi as have no idea if long-term injury has affected their form

Would love to see Warburton and Robshaw in the same team.

Fullback is probably the most difficult position to pick. They are all great defensively and in the air. Kearney, Brown and Hogg are the best attackers. But for me, when he’s on form, Brown has an attitude that seems to drag teams forward with him. He breaks tackles he has no right to break and gains metres against the toughest defenses. It gets his teams on the front foot and makes the oppostion very wary about kicking the ball to him

Also think Dunbar could be brilliant in this kind of team

1. A.Dickinson 2.Baldwin 3. Cole 4. Charteris 5. AW Jones 6. Robshaw 7. Warburton (Capt) 8.Denton 9. Youngs 10. Sexton 11. A. Watson 12. A Dunbar 13. J. Joseph 14. G. North 15. Hogg
Bench
16. T Young 17. J. McGrath 18. A.Jarvis 19. O’Connell 20. J. Murphy 21. Webb 22. Biggar 23. L.Williams

Probably a sin to leave out O’Mahony and Bench O’Connell but Charteris had an amazing championship. Back 3 is a very tough call. Apart from Hogg Scotland felt a little uncertain, Irelands back 3 all solid and Henshaw was brilliant but I feel Dunbar has been a rock for scotland and denton in a more solid and certain pack is a really big threat. Vunipola and S O’Brien were great, but both have issues as well. If we were talking wales Halfpenny would be playing 11 and Williams 15.

Leaving any one of the Home Nation’s 15s at home is a travesty, embarrassment of riches

1- Healy
2- Baldwin
3- Cole
4- AW Jones/o’conell, both offer fantastic if not identical games
5- charteris-ability to stop driving mauls and lineout threat
6- Lydiate-never fails a tackle
7- Warburton-such a big game player
8- Vunipola-carrying ability
9- youngs-form of his life
10- Biggar-probably the deadliest from the tee and doesn’t even get to kick, wasted

15- Williams-has to be played here

16.Youngs 17. Lee 18. Hibbard 19. Lawes 20. O’Brien 21. Webb 22. Ford 23. Henshaw

Absolutely sick of Sexton riding his class of old, he wasn’t up to the scratch of ford or biggar this 6N

Hate to say it but Huget is French and can’t therefore play for the British Lions, other wise I’d play Paraise at 8 . lol

Mine based on 6N:

1. Marler
2. Hartley
3. Cole
4. AWJ
5. POC
6. Robshaw
7. Warburton
8. Vunipola
9. Murray
10. Biggar
11. L. Williams

18. Lee
19. Charteris
20. O’Brien
21. Webb
22. Sexton
23. North

If everyone is fit and in playing at their very best.. then I’d go for:

1. Healey
2. Youngs
3. Cole
4. O’Connell
5. Launchbury
6. O’brien
7. Warburton
8. Morgan
9. Youngs
10. Sexton
11. North
12. Dunbar
13. Davies
14. Bowe
15. Hogg

16. Hibbard
17. Corbs
18. Wilson
19. Lawes
20. O’Mahony
21. Murray
22. Ford
23. JJ

Interesting to see how some young guys develop over the next two years. Guys like Watson will be so much better with a bit more experience. Think O’Mahony is a future Lions captain.

12 is still the trickiest call. Big Roberts fan but I like a more distributing 12 – which does slightly rule out him (and the English – Barritt and Burrell or equally Tuilagi moving in. Not 12T obviously). Roberts is perfect for Warrenball but maybe not for other game plans, could very much see him at 13 if Schmidt was coach. Henshaw is a prospect but still raw – going to watch him very closely. Liked what I saw of Dunbar so went with him – but probably the position most open to a wildcard staking a late claim in 2 years. Cough Slade cough. Scott Williams is a shout.

How are people still picking Tuilagi, He hasnt played for months and months.
It’s such a long lay off he may not be the player he was when he comes back (never thought he was that good anyway, Over hyped).
You should only base this on current form. So here are mine, My thoughts only.
1. Healy
2. Baldwin
3. Cole
4. Wyn-Jones
5. O’Connell
6 O’brien
7. Warburton (c)
8. Falatau
9. Youngs
10. Sexton
11. North
12. Roberts
13. Joseph
14 Liam Williams
15. Hogg

16. Hartley
17. Marler
18. Lee
19. Lawes
20. O’Mahoney
21. Bigger
22. Scott Williams
23. Murray

Team 1
1. Marler
2. Best
3. Cole
4. Lawes
5. Jones (C)
6. O’Mahony
7. Robshaw
8. Vunipola
9. Youngs
10. Sexton
11. North
12. Dunbar
13. Joseph
14. Wade
15. Hogg

Team 2
1. Healy
2. Hartley
3. Lee
4. Toner
5. J Gray
6. O’Brien
7. Warburton (C)
8. Morgan
9. Murray
10. Biggar
11. Seymour
12. Henshaw
13. J Davies
14. Halfpenny
15. L Williams

Given the next Lions tour is to NZ … why is Billy V in consideration when a foot race with Kieran Read would end in an embarassment ! I’m English thru n thru & a tourist from 3 tours; but we need a balanced back row – I can’t see him ever wearing the red shirt with such predictable plays …
