Aviva Premiership Team of the Week – Round 9

Bryce Heem

1 – Ellis Genge (Leicester)
His England squad omission certainly raised a few eyebrows but his performance against Sale was amazing, left defenders in his wake carrying ball in hand, scoring a powerful try and his scrummaging was on par as well.

2 – Jack Singleton (Worcester)
Singleton was really good for Worcester against Northampton, nailing his set-piece and carrying astutely throughout the game.

3 – Nick Schonert (Worcester)
The South African born prop was influential in Worcester’s win, his scrummaging was exceptional and his carrying was consistent as well.

4 – Jonny Hill (Exeter)
Hill was one of Exeter’s few performers on Sunday, putting in a superb shift and excelled at Exeter’s pick and go game scoring 2 tries, one from close range and one from a good support line.

5 – Mike Fitzgerald (Leicester)
After his long return from injury, Fitzgerald put in a impressive shift being robust in the carry and defending constantly for the whole match.

6 – Ruan Ackermann (Gloucester)
The South African was at the heart of a resounding Cherry & White win over Premiership leaders Saracens, tackling and carrying throughout the entire match.

7 – Will Evans (Leicester)
His battle with Ben Curry was certainly quite interesting, but Evans carried so well, set up Genge for his try with very goood footwork and was, like any good traditional 7, competing so effectively around the breakdown.

8 – Valentino Mapapalangi (Leicester)
The Tongan number 8 had by far his best game in a Leicester shirt being absolutely destructive in the carry and solid off the ball as well.

9 – Ben Vellacott (Gloucester)
Although a replacement, his impact cannot be underestimated for he showed off his pace and skill in the air before scoring his own try at the base of the posts by charging past 3 Saracens defenders.

10 – Freddie Burns (Bath)
Burns had an immaculate game from the tee kicking 17 of his side’s 22 point win over bottom side London Irish.

11 – Olly Woodburn (Exeter)
Woodburn produced an absolutely sensational finish against Harlequins and made an excellent tackle on James Horwill to prevent a try.

12 – Kyle Eastmond (Wasps)
It’s so good to see Eastmond back from injury and it looked as though he’d never been gone against Newcastle, dummying before scoring a great individual try. Let’s hope his concussion is not too serious.

13 – Billy Twelvetrees (Gloucester)
Twelvetrees controlled the game so well on Friday night and was key to his side’s great home win against Saracens, and he was sound from the tee with 10 points to his name.

14 – Bryce Heem (Worcester)
Heem was absolutely on fire against Northampton and seemingly unstoppable scoring a hat-trick of actually quite difficult tries, beating loads of defenders and picking lines.

15 – Willie le Roux (Wasps)
This season le Roux has probably been one of Wasps’ worst performers but has regained his form remarkably and was excellent at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday constantly threating Newcastle’s defence with good breaks and was solid under the high ball.

  1. Am I going potty? Probably, but did Vellacott score. I can remember Hudson going past Sarries players and scoring next to the post. However, Vellacott turned the game around when he came on – fully deserves his nomination. To be fair, I thought Goode had an outstanding match for Sarries. Kicking out of hand was superb and excellent decision making as well.

    1. Although Sarries really aren’t my favourite team, I’d forgotten about Schalk Brit’s as well. Tremendous game. Some of his running lines should be used in coaching manuals. He deserves a mention at hooker for this week too.

  2. Good to see Kyle Eastmond in this mix. Always thought England didn’t trust him or give him much of a chance. Also rate le Roux, although @ Wasps he doesn’t always seem to have thrived as he did @ Int’al level. Interesting that 12trees is this team too. Could have worked for him under Lancaster, but it didn’t really pan out. Dunno if has has the nous for the top flight. Saw him butcher a cert when for Gloucester once, when he only had to pass to the wing on overlap. It was just 1 game, but it may have epitomised an innate inability to make correct decisions. Still, if he keeps his thinking going..? Heem is a goer & should be well drilled having been coached by Tietjens. The rest I don’t really know enough about.
