    1. Jones: “Cipriani knows what he has to do, at the moment he’s not one or two, he needs to be number 1. When he plays well enough he’ll be in”

I don’t think this is true, and can’t see what else Cipriani can do.

I think the Lozowski selection is to ward off interest from Italy, for which he also qualifies, but it’s still fairly clear that Cipriani does not feature in Jones’ plans.

  1. Doesn’t look as though Cips is ever going to get a look in – he’s clearly playing better than Lozowski even if he is behind Ford and Farrell.

Doesn’t look like there is much change. The 7 and 12 shirts will be most debatable without Haskell and Farrell available – I would think probably Jones and Slade will play based on the above squads, otherwise it’ll be a very similar 23 to the Aus tests.

  2. Thought Guy Thompson may get a look in due to his blinding form . s ahme he dodn’t

As for Cipriani, there’s nothing more he can do. Bet he wishes he’d buggered off to France a couple of years back

  3. Jones is 9 from 9 including a series win over Australia. He’s obviously seen something in Cipriani that he feels doesn’t cut the mustard at international level and I trust that.

      1. Critiquing is part of our right as fans, it’s just difficult to with Jones. Sure, he has made mistakes, but he has always had a back up plan in case things don’t quite pan out; Burrell and Harrison being prime examples. It’s nice to be able to have a little blind faith again.

  4. Disappointed but not terribly surprised at Cip’s exclusion. Definitely didn’t expect to see Lozowski in the mix, though Hutch’s point about warding off Italy makes sense. Really pleased that Robson made the 45, got to feel a bit for Simpson though!

Thoughts on Henry Mallinder? Unlucky not to be included this time or is EJ playing a longer game and giving him a chance to build confidence in the Saxons (and maybe also figure out what position suits him best long-term)? Or just another promising (and large) U20 who may never quite cut it at senior international level?

  5. Interesting point on Lozowski being qualified for Italy. He’s certainly started the season well in Farrell’s absence but does need more consistency off the tee.
Spencer is a surprise addition for me, having only played the first four rounds off the bench for Sarries?! I can only assume that Jones has seen something that he likes. I expect Spencer to surprise a few people if he gets a chance.

Also nice to see names like Haley, Marchant and Robson on these lists.

  6. Love how people think Cipriani is a potential Lion. If he can’t even make the England 37 man squad then how is he going to make the Lions squad? People on here dont realise that there is a huge gap between domestic rugby and international rugby, he may be lighting up the premiership but he must not be doing to right things that Jones is looking for. If Cipriani can continue his Wasps form into the Champions Cup then he might have a case for the 6N.

  7. Cathal, just because people have different opinions to you doesn’t mean they don’t understand the difference between club rugby and international rugby. I for one think Cipriani is a top quality player who offers something different to the norm and traditionally coaches of England teams both in football and rugby don’t like that. I thought Eddie Jones might be different, that said I believe Eddie is doing a great job at the moment.

  8. Interesting decisions…
    Tommy Taylor over Luke C-D
    Spencer over Simpson
    Lozowski over Cipriani
Harrison over Evans (he’s in the 45,so surely next choice?)

  9. Any English born players in the squad after all the SH merc that have been given/been offered a cap?

53.3 million population and we have what 10 SH players ‘selected’ plus a Caribbean player too.

There is no such thing as the ‘English rugby team’ as they are simply not English.

No English fan can EVER claim that NZ/Aus ‘poach’ islander players ever again after a squad selected like this!

  10. Y Draig

Stop sounding like a spoilt child!
I don’t here you vociferously complaining about the ABs all being Pacific Islanders (neither now nor in the past bearing in mind their poaching goes back to 1990). That’s why your comment should be taken with a pinch of salt!
I surmise that there are REALLY other resentments behind this comment:
    Chiefly:
    1. The current success of Team England
    2. The riches available to them player-wise

The 53.3 m comment is completely asinine as well as a red-herring. The real question is how many of that figure play rugby? All we know with certainty is there are far more English rugby players! However it is not the religion that it is in Wales so perhaps Wales ought to do better with the resources they have!
As football is the main sport in this country it would be fair enough to have a moan about the football boys (in trouble yet again right now – always will be I fear) but there are not 53.3 million English rugby players all running around like headless chickens! Far from it!
What would be nice is a comment from a Welshman that goes something like this…..

What a cracking squad. I’m so looking forward to the Autumn tests and the next WC when hopefully England can return to the number one spot in the world displacing the ABs. I know I’m Welsh but when all’s said and done I’ll support England when I can (unlike the Welsh WC football team)

    Love

    1. Im not on anyone’s side in this but when you look at the number of registered players around the world:

      1 – England – 2,549,196
      2 – South Africa – 632,184
      3 – France – 313,877
      4 – Ireland – 153,080
      5 – New Zealand – 137,853
      6 – Japan – 122,598
      7 – USA – 88,151
      8 – Australia – 86,951
      9 – Italy – 66,176
      10 – Wales – 50,557

England nearly have twice the number of registered players as every other top countries combined.

      1. Yes but those figures are slightly miss leading if you look into how many of those are senior males, then the gulf is no were near as much.

      2. The figure I saw for England was 1.9 and that could be lower as Alex says with old duffers in the mix.
There is still a large disparity but the argument was started with some idiotic Welsh comment of 53.3 million English players all side-stepping, dummying and shimmying their way to Twickenham! As usual I took it on!

  11. Thought Simpson might have made the EPS but like the look of Spencer. Cips is just not going to make it no matter what I fear, Farrell has always justified selection but he has not even played yet this year and Lozowski doesn’t really stand out as a better option. Interesting decision at 7 as most back row options don’t seem traditional fits, got to feel a little sorry for Kvesic.

  12. Sorry last couple of thoughts, Te’o over Banahan is not contentious but think harsh and Eastmond seems a lot bigger and defensively solid at Wasps…might be an option at 12 again soon?
