Lions Player Ratings Versus New Zealand 1st Test

New Zealand 30 – 15 Lions

The Scarlets Centre had a superb game

All the hype and optimism of the Northern hemisphere’s media corps could not will into being a victory against the All Blacks. The cynics will tell you they warned you so, but the parapet is short and those few who stand above it are likely to be shot down; it is a gamble and a leap of faith to back the underdog. And today saw that faith shaken in an earth shattering collision of wills where the truth was revealed after months of speculation; the Lions were outplayed and outshone. It was a good start from the visitors, drawing off the electric atmosphere of a packed Eden Park. Davies and Daly combined well in the early minutes which fed hopes of an upset. As the first half wore on, it became more and more apparent that the All Black pack were wrestling control of the game away from their Lions counterparts. One moment of magic (that could easily have seen Liam Williams isolated, turned over and try conceded) saw the Welsh fullback break through the waves of black to combine with former team mate Davies, to gift O’Brien a simple try. But it would not be enough and after the break the All Blacks ruthlessly tightened the screws with Ioane finishing a brace of clinical tries to put the first test to bed.

Backs

Liam Williams – 8
A superb counter attack from the former Scarlets man that goes down as one of the best test tries in Lions history. Good in defence and blistering in attack (2 Clean Breaks, 3 defenders beaten). A pity his schoolboy error in failing to take the high kick led to the second Ioane try.

Anthony Watson – 8
Cut out a ‘Barrett special’ crossfield kick to deny a certain try. Stepped well and looked sharp and dangerous. His best performance of this tour.

Jonathan Davies – 8.5
Didn’t put a foot wrong. Involved in the Liam Williams’ break and generally assisted in attack. Carried well and offloaded with excellent skill. The best centre on the field. 85 metres off 9 runs, 5 clean breaks, 3 defenders beaten.

Ben Te’o – 7
Did exactly what was required of him. Played the percentages and carried over the gainline in small margins and kept Sonny Bill fairly quiet. The tackle in the second half epitomised his effort.

Elliot Daly – 7.5
Created some much needed space in the Williams’ counter attack by cleverly drawing his man. Showed the same astuteness throughout the game. Almost went over early on but for a superb Israel Dagg tackle and generally chased down kicks.

Owen Farrell – 6.5
Had a reasonable first half but couldn’t wrestle control of the game away from Barrett and Cruden. Seemed to get lost. Missed a conversion but overall kicking from hand was good.

Conor Murray- 6.5
As with his fly-half, they were forced on the back foot by brilliant All Black game management and didn’t have the chance to launch any coordinated attacks. Rhys Webb came on late in the second half to gift the Lions a try with a darting run from close. Box kicking was good, but targeted by the All Blacks. Probably could have distributed to Daly following Davies’ early break.

Pack

Mako Vunipola – 6
Failed to make as big an impact as his previous performances have promised. Scrum could have been better. Tireless clearing out too.

Jamie George – 6
Misses out on Most Tackles by one to Faletau (21). Lineout was good, but loose work could have been better.

Tadhg Furlong – 6
Similar to Vunipola, Furlong did not have the desired impact. Made very little ground on the charge from a stalwart All Black defence.

Alun Wyn Jones – 5.5
The ItAWJ debate should have been put to bed with this performance. His usual fiery self was doused by a determined and clinical All Black pack.

George Kruis – 5.5
Had the ball ripped away from him in contact which led to a threatening All Black counter. Lacked the physicality and skill to deal with his counterparts.

Peter O’Mahony – 6.5
Although the majority of the pack struggled to make an impact, O’Mahony took the reins and led by example. Not the impact he’d have liked, but nevertheless put in a positive performance, securing lineouts and carrying well.

Sean O’Brien – 6.5
Some good jackaling but stifled by the All Black back-row. Good in the loose and broke at one point.

Toby Faletau – 7
Strong ball carrier and great in defence (21 tackles), the in-form number 8 had to use all his talent to try and match an immense Kieran Read. Sadly, not enough but commendable effort.

Replacements

Ken Owens – 5.5
Came on in the dying stages, and couldn’t find a way in. First lineout was rushed. Replaced George 68’

Jack McGrath – 6
Scrum did not get any better when he replaced Vunipola 52′

Kyle Sinckler – 6
A very visible break from being there at the right time. Whilst we all love to see a prop bounding down the wing, he should have released the quicker Daly. Nevertheless, continues to look in form. Replaced Furlong 58’

Maro Itoje – 6.5
Added spark to the pack battle which was quickly fizzled out. An improvement on AWJ but the All Blacks took his introduction in their stride. Replaced Alun Wyn Jones 48′

Sam Warburton – 6
Usual Warburton average game. Made a nuisance of himself and gave a good account at the breakdown. Replaced O’Mahony 53’

Rhys Webb – 6.5
Sparky as per. Made use of some tired legs to poach a try. Had he been on for longer, his impact would have been worn down by Cruden and Read. Replaced Murray 67′

Jonny Sexton – 6
For all the Sexton-Farrell connection hype, it didn’t work particularly well. Much the same muchness as Farrell regarding game management. Replaced Te’o 57′

Leigh Halfpenny – N/A
Came on for a tired Williams to ensure no late All Black breaks. Replaced Williams 72′

Worthy mentions

Kieran Read – 9
Possibly the best number 8 performance I’ve seen in a long time. Ruthless in attack (62 metres off 19 runs) and a menace at the breakdown. His ability to collect loose ball from the scrum and keep the move alive with a slick flick up was the reason Ioane scored. Replaced by Scott Barrett 77′

Beauden Barrett – 8
Good game management and some exceptional skill. Kicked well at the posts but couldn’t evade a dogged Lions defence, astute to his ability to break through the 9-10 channel.

Aaron Cruden – 8
Brilliant from Cruden, like quicksilver. Nimble footwork and a handful. Even threw his comparatively small weight around and turned over at one point.

Gatland claimed the All Blacks didn’t play champagne rugby and I’d agree with him. I don’t quite see why that matters – it’s not as if the Lions can claim they’re not averse to getting the job done however ugly (ahem, Crusaders). Quite simply, the All Blacks were very clinical with basic ball skills; epitomised by Taylor’s try. Their execution was fantastic and the game was won entirely by their belief in their ability. Barrett’s retreating pickup, or his retreating risky pass to the wing, sum up how this All Black team play. They don’t play it safe and they don’t need to worry about mistakes because they make so few. This was a good Lions’ performance, with Liam Williams and Jonathan Davies playing some superb rugby which is reflected in the Welsh overall rating. I wonder if Kiwi Scarlets coach, Wayne Pivac, has anything to do with that, blending the best of Northern Hemisphere backline technical skill and Southern Hemisphere space creation. The first test rings true with the wise words of Joe Marler in an interview – ‘the thing about the All Blacks is… they’re very good’. Of course, this was tongue in cheek, but that is literally the only thing of value you can say. The Lions played well, but the All Blacks played better.

  1. Seems a tad generous on Davies and a tad harsh on Farrell. Davies didn’t have anywhere near enough pace to take advantage of the breaks made (should have kicked ahead!), and it was Farrell’s passing that put him in those gaps.

I would like to see Davis at 12 with JJ or Daly outside him. If Farrell can put JJ or Daly into space like that we would have much more chance of finishing. If Davies can contain Sonny Bill (if he’s all he’s cracked up to be he should) and get go forward ball and offload in the tackle more opportunities will come. T’eo was good but not as good in attack as he has been. Well shackled by the ABs.

    1. Dazza – yeah, I’ve been hearing things about a Jiffy and Joseph partnership. I think it’s probably too late to start experimenting with that. I don’t doubt he would be great at 12 given enough time, but taking the gamble for the tests would be so risky, particularly against a team that will punish even the smallest mistake re, positioning and whatnot.

Farrell and Murray were snuffed out and couldn’t make an impact after the break. Jonathan Davies’ early break wasn’t so much Farrell putting him in space but Davies doing what he does so well and straightening up and getting around a lock.

  2. does anyone else think Gatland will be regretting not calling up launchberry now? AWJ looked off the pace and tired, Kruis did not have his best game in the loose. next Test i would have Kritoje with Lawes on bench (or Itoje+Lawes to start?). But i just think we lost the collisions and the breakdown 2 things Launchberry is great at while adding stability to a pack… one of the few players on form that could challenge Retalick (to be clear im not saying win here … just challenge).

Also felt we missed a proper breakdown technician to clear the rucks or spoil their ball until Warbuton came on (would have him at 6 on saturday).

Back 3 looked deadly… for all their plaudits im not sure the centres of te’o and Davies get the ball out wide enough… i would drop one of the 2 of them to the bench and put JJ, Payne or Daly to 13 to give more ball playing (especially as the sexton/farrel combo did not function). that way you also have one of the 2 on the bench to come on and run at tired defence later!

wouldnt change the team otherwise but think the front row need a rocket up their ass about winning the scrum/collisions and Webb should come on earlier with Murray told to kick less…. we needed the possession.

    1. Think he should be if he isn’t already thinking about it. AWJ really didn’t contribute anything in the time he was on, and looked gassed prior to the end of the first half. He doesn’t bring enough athleticism which Lawes and Itoje can add.

Think something to address is the bench, which offered very little in terms of possible impact, with the exception of maybe Sinkler who carried well. Bring in Stander and JJ/Nowell/North on to the bench and then you have options that can possible change the game. We needed a score in the second half and only had Warbuton and Halfpenny to turn to, who would be much more useful securing a lead rather than chasing a game.

    2. Itoje bit too lightweight as yet I’m afraid; came on breathing fire, and the ABs just shrugged and stopped him. Took a great line-out ball, though in a very dangerous position.
For next week, Kruis and AWJ have to be retained, but I would definitely see Henderson on the bench – esp. if he has a good 50/60 mins on Tuesday.

      1. Itoje is not lightweight. He is only 2kgs lighter than AWJ. He will bring more athleticism and presence at the breakdown. Also a great line out stealer and ball carrier. AWJ was great at all of these back in his prime, but unfortunately those days are gone. Give Itoje a chance from the start and see what he can do.

      2. How do you mean lightweight? AWJ and Itoje are pretty much the same in terms of physical weight so not sure what you mean. Itoje also carries much more effectively than AWJ. Apologies if im being dim.

Not doubting his passion but think he isn’t running at full fitness or in top form, a few knock-ons and no threat at the breakdown. I don’t think one lineout catch redeems an otherwise below-par performance. His experience didn’t seem to count for much either.

Itoje and Kruis to start with Lawes or Henderson on the bench.

        1. Looking at the 23 for the Canes game it would appear that Itoje may start 2nd test………but with AWJ retained!! Gats must have watched a different game?

    3. Alex, if you honestly think Gatland is going to drop JD after a performance like that, you must be mad. He was the only Lions player who looked genuinely world class, and was the best outside back on the field. I would love to have JJ on the bench; is there room, though?

      1. Taliesin please contain your one eyed welsh bias for one post please and read what i had put. I said drop either Te’o or Davies… based on the performance i would have Davies at inside center and Te’o on the bench (as he does for england).

On AWJ i presume only national pride is backing your argument currently… as continuously proved (with stats) AWJ has been off form this tour, he is not the player he used to be and looked lackluster this weekend, he was in their for his leadership and i could not see him providing enough (not to say none) on the weekend to warrant it. Henderson or Lawes would be better on bench with the (practically same weight as AWJ but far more athletic) Itoje starting with Kruis.

  3. Some ridiculously high scores here
Williams – 7 one good attack doesn’t merit an 8
Watson – 7 Played well when had the chance but not involved enough
Davies – 8 some great breaks in the first half but failed to find his support runners. much quieter in 2nd half
Teo – 6.5 Failed to have enough carrying impact ball in hand and didn’t fix the NZ defence enough to open up wider channels
Daly – 7.5 high work rate on kick chase good support and running lines
Farrell – 7 Couple of nice passes but struggled playing off the back foot and tried to force it a couple of times
Murray 6.5 – Decent box kicking allowed Lions to recover the ball a couple of times but showed no threat around the fringe and failed to organise ruck defence properly
Faletau – 6.5 points for effort but part of a backrow that lost to contact area
    O’Brien – 6.5 See above
POM – lost the contact area and ineffective in attack. Good lineout target thou
AWJ – 2 Slow, dominated, knocked on a bunch and completely ineffectual
Kruis – 4 knocked on a bunch, dominated in the contact area but ran the lineout well
Furlong – 5 worked hard but had limited impact
George – 6 strong D and lineout but got stripped too easily
Mako – 4 struggled at scrum time didn’t have as much impact in the loose as usual

    1. Why don’t people WATCH the flippin game before they sound off on here? Davies DID find his support runners, that’s the whole point. Go back and watch the game!

      1. Calm down princess you will note I still scored him an 8 the highest score of the whole team. I just felt his timing on the pass left something to be desired and could have made the difference to some of those chances being finished

  4. With the player ratings above the average forwards rating is 6.15, and the player rating for the backs is 7.39. Seems about right, the pack being outmuscled by the ABs and the backs putting in a decent performance (especially the back 3).
