So the team in Pool 1 is Russian. Does anyone know how they got in here?
As opposed to a Romanian, Spanish or Georgian team (for example).
Also, Google maps seems to indicate that they are located closer to China than they are to Moscow, so that would be quite a trip!
There was a “qualification tournament” a few weeks ago involving teams from Russia, Spain, Romania, Portugal and Italy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Rugby_Challenge_Cup_Qualifying_Competition. Honestly, seems like a bit of a joke and a real shame, the old tournament had quite a few teams from different countries and that was good to encourage the game to grow in those nations. When this tournament was announced, the message was that there would be a third-tier qualification tournament… and whilst technically I suppose there is it’s a bit disappointing that it’s so low-key and has so few participants
