Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has named an exciting team to take on the World XV in Cape Town this weekend, in a warm-up fixture before the Rugby Championship.
Exciting Bulls fullback Jesse Kriel takes the outside centre shirt, alongside one of the standout South Africans in Super Rugby this season, Damien de Allende. Handré Pollard continues his fledgling partnership with the vastly experienced Ruan Pienaar at half-back.
In the pack, Warren Whitely gets a chance to make his mark on the number 8 shirt, with Duane Vermeulen facing a race against time for the World Cup. That timeless warrior, Victor Matfield, captains the side from the engine room, while the front row has a familar look to it – the Sharks trio of the du Plessis brothers and Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira getting the shirts.
From the bench, Jean de Villiers has the chance to make his long-awaited comeback after sitting out the entirety of the season with a knee injury.

Fantastic to see De Villiers back in the fold for the Boks. Nobody would’ve blamed him had he retired because of that injury, it was a monster and would’ve made blubbering messes out of the biggest of men. Great show of bravery and character from one of the gents of the game.
ruaan pienaar????? JP Pietersen?????
Don’t tell me you want to play a World Cup in England without Ruan Pienaar.
Worst front row to date
My front row would of been. Kitshof, scara and malherbe. Koch to come on from bench.
Hope he gets stuck in mate and doesn’t let his injury worry him.
Shocking front row. There time has passed
Their*
Pienaar???? WTF?
FYI, your date is wrong. 11th July.
HAPPY TO SEE de ALLENDE AND WHITELEY STARTING. I’m SURE THEY WILL MAKE US PROUD.
totally agree with the above comments why is Ruan Pienaar and JP Pietersen in the squad as well as the front row of the Sharks would have started with Cobus Reinarch and a completely different front row altogether
Wereld..
Don’t know Kriel, de Allende or even Whiteley that well, but the front of Plessis x2 & Mtawarira are EXP. Has their time really gone?
On the other hand are Matfield & Burger maybe TOO exp now?
Heyneke Meyer en Victor het nou seker weer lekker laas naweek saam gebraai en toe moes hy hom maar kies vir die naweek se span!! Matfield?? Pienaar?? Pietersen?? Die hele voor ry?? Kriel?? Ek dink die coach moet gesup word!!
